A Safer Space with Haiku
New Product Release: 7/14/2020
Big Ass Fans just announced the release of this new virus killing Haiku ceiling fan, which will be "Assembled in the USA" to order in their Lexington KY facility. They estimate a 40 day turnaround from the time you place your order, but we predict the demand will quickly push the lead time closer to 6-8 weeks. If you are interested in this fan, please order now to avoid further delays.
Unseen airborne pathogens in your space can spread disease and cause stress for your friends and family. While following proper health precautions can limit your risk, these personal measures don’t directly address the source of the problem.
To make your gatherings safe and free from worry, Big Ass Fans now offers UV-C air disinfection technology on premium indoor Haiku fans. UV-C employs short-wave ultraviolet light that’s safe for humans but alters pathogens’ genetic structure, destroying their ability to replicate and infect occupants.
How Haiku with UV-C Works
Seamlessly integrated atop the fan, Haiku’s UV-C fixture directs invisible light upward, killing up to 99.9%* of viruses, bacteria, mold, and other harmful airborne agents that pass through the disinfection zone. Haiku’s powerful air mixing improves circulation within the space, bringing more pathogens into the disinfection zone and halting the spread of disease.
Available on new indoor Haiku ceiling fans, the UV-C technology is conveniently controlled through the Haiku by Big Ass Fans mobile app. Simply toggle Clean Mode to activate, or use the app’s automated preference settings to schedule routine disinfection for your space.
*Third-party tested in sealed 1,000 ft3 chamber with 60-inch Haiku on high speed setting. Haiku with UV-C technology achieved 99.9% reduction rate of a microbial suspension within 10 minutes. “Killing” is standard industry terminology for reduction rate.
Note: Haiku UV-C is not interchangeable or combinable with Uplight or the standard LED kit and cannot be installed by user post-purchase.

How does the Haiku with Bacteria Killing UV-C Uplight Compare to the Average Ceiling Fan?
Quality Rating = 5.000000 (average is 3)
With a Quality Rating of 5, the Haiku with Bacteria Killing UV-C Uplight is among the finest quality ceiling fans made. It will run smooth and quiet without wobbling or making noise and you can let it run 24 hours a day for years on end without any worries of the motor burning out.
Wind Speed Factor: 3.59 MPH (average is about 3)
A Wind Speed Factor of 3.59 MPH gives this fan a Breeze Rating of 5 out of 5. This is a stronger breeze than most ceiling fans, so if you are looking for a fan to keep you cool, the 60" Haiku UV-C Disinfecting great choice. Aside from Quality, which accounts for smooth quiet operation and durability, the amount of wind-chill a fan can provide to cool you off is the most important consideration.
Airflow = 7957 CFM (average is about 5,000)
7957 CFM is a lot of airflow and is far above average, which is very good news if you want a ceiling fan that can really cool you off. Fans like this will allow you to raise your thermostat by up to 10 degrees, which can save you as much as 40% on your cooling bills. By doing so, it is possible that the Haiku with Bacteria Killing UV-C Uplight may pay for itself during the first year of operation depending on the normal cost to run your air conditioning (if you have AC).
Efficiency Rating = 253 CFM/Watt (average is about 86)
An Efficiency Rating of 253 is in the "WOW" range of super efficient making the Haiku with Bacteria Killing UV-C Uplight one of the most environmentally friendly ceiling fans ever made. Efficiency is defined by the EPA as the amount of airflow a fan produces (CFM) divided by the amount of electricity (Watts) it uses on high speed without any lights on. Efficiency is less important than Airflow because more CFMs allow you to raise your thermostat higher...which is where you will save the most energy. Efficiency becomes more important if you expect to operate several ceiling fans at the same time. (see calculator below)
Electrical Usage = 31 Watts (average is about 76)
31 Watts per hour is "Extremely Low", which is fantastic because the Haiku with Bacteria Killing UV-C Uplight will cost almost nothing to operate compared to other ceiling fans. Use the calculator below to estimate just how much it will cost to operate this fan in "Your home".
Wind Speed Factor -vs- Efficiency: Wind Speed is KING! Ceiling fans can save you a lot on your energy bills if you use them properly to reduce your use of central air. Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind-chill effect, so the more wind speed a fan generates, the cooler it will make you feel. The cooler your ceiling fan can make you feel, the higher you can raise your AC thermostat to conserve energy without sacrificing your level of comfort. Raising your thermostat by 10 degrees can save you up to 40% on your cooling bills, but you cannot raise your thermostat by 10 degrees if you focus only on ceiling fans that use less energy rather than ones that generate higher wind speed. To put this in perspective: A typical central air system uses about 3500 Watts when it is running, so if a ceiling fan that uses 100 watts allows you to raise your thermostat a couple degrees higher than a more "efficient" fan that uses only 50 watts, the savings you will get by raising your AC thermostat a couple degrees higher is far more than the difference of 50 watts between the two fans. With that said, a ceiling fan that uses less watts yet produces higher wind speed is a win-win.
